Jim Smith named Sebago's Interim Town Manager
The Sebago Board of Selectmen has named Jim Smith as the Interim Town Manager for the town.  Smith has been Sebago’s Code Enforcement Officer (CEO) for nearly two years and is a familiar face to homeowners and contractors who seek to build and remodel in the Town, as well as to the Sebago Planning Board and Zoning Board of Appeals.  He has developed a reputation for being fair and objective in his dealings with the public, even when there are differences of opinion on the interpretation of regulations or codes.

It was these qualities as a professional, as well as his thorough knowledge of on-going projects in the Town and the Town’s employees, that helped convince the Board of Selectmen to select Smith to serve as Sebago’s Interim Town Manager.

Sebago’s Town Manager Robert Nicholson has tendered his resignation and his last day as Town Manager will be October 31, 2008.  The Board felt that it was appropriate to hire an Interim Town Manager to carry out the Town Manager’s duties and manage the day-to-day operations of the Town during this period until a full-time Town Manager is hired to succeed Nicholson.  The Board of Selectmen will begin the search to find and hire a full-time Town Manager in early November and expect the process to take three to four months.

Eight candidates from around the country applied for the Interim Town Manager position.  Of these, the Board interviewed four at their meeting on Tuesday, October 14, and felt that Smith would be the best candidate for the position.

Smith will continue to serve as Sebago’s CEO during the interim period.  Traditionally the pressures from permits and inspections on the CEO decline during the late fall and winter, and both the Board and Smith are confident that he will be able to juggle both jobs at the same time.

Jim Smith lives in Parsonfield, Maine, and is a New England native.  Before being hired as Sebago’s CEO in November 2006 he held several responsible management and supervisory positions including 8 years as the Director of Maintenance and Facilities with the Pittsylvania County Schools (Virginia), 5 ½ years as an administrator with the Office of Building Inspection in South Portland (Maine) and 2 ½ years as CEO for the Town of Scarborough (Maine).
